It was cold and snowy weather this week. We got hit by a nice big snow storm on Wednesday that closed many parts of the city down. My husband took a snow day, so we ended up having one as well.

This is from our window about mid afternoon and it kept on snowing overnight. The blue building across the street makes awesome Eggs Benedict, which is convenient because it is my favorite food to eat. My motto is "Everything is better with Hollandaise sauce".

So with all this snow now, I don't have any winter boots. My husband puked on/in mine and he still owes me a new pair. Now that the winter weather is more than halfway done though I have decided I will accept a new pair of non winter boots in their stead. So honey, if you are reading this I dig this style in a size 8. I like all of the colours but probably would get more use out of black. Plus, they are on sale right now.

This week in review:

Memory Work - The Canadian Provinces and Territories are now memorized and we have added a science list and terms.

Phonics - We have finished lesson 216 in OPTGR. We are getting close to being done and I hope she doesn't get stuck and stall out over the next few lessons.

First Language Lessons - Lesson 54, we are on action verbs.

In this lesson she had to read the sentences and underline the verbs.

Writing with Ease - Completed week 17 of copy work and narration exercises.

Latin (Song School Latin) - We learned some more Christmas words as well as did a big review of the whole year.

French (Nallenart) - We started words that are found on a farm. I need to buy some more lamination supplies though so I can finish the flash cards for these terms.

Math (Singapore Math) - I added a bunch more new math facts and we have begun addition of numbers higher than ten by making a 10 first. It's a slow process but I think she is grasping the concept.

History (Story of the World) - We finished chapter 17 The Return of the Assyrians and read about Ashurbanipal and Nineveh. She made a book for Ashurbanipal's Library in Nineveh and used so much glitter I had to do 3 sweeps of the floor to get it all up.

Science (Elemental) - We have now entered the studying of reptiles. This weeks animals included a snake which she hates. She didn't want to read about them until I pulled up some videos on YouTube of snake charmers. She thought that was kind of neat and relaxed a little bit. We also watch a video of the Australian Frilled Lizard running which she howled and laughed at.

Composer Study - We listened to more works by Henry Purcell and watched some YouTube videos of people and orchestras playing his pieces.

On the WTM this week there was a thread about typing programs and Angela from Satori Smiles recommended Dance Mat Typing  which we tried this week and Roo loved it. So thank you Angela!

Monchhichi and Me - Weekly Report

Monchhichi will be discussed down further. This is probably my second last week before we break for baby day. My due date is the 21st, but because I didn't attempt get the doctor to turn the baby and honestly I don't want to try for a regular breech birth, I am having a c-section. The date isn't set yet as they are trying to get a time in the o/r to do it so chances are I will go into labor first which sucks. Have I mentioned that after my ultrasound last week to see the baby's position we found out it was a girl? It inspired me to get down to business and buy some new baby clothes. I gave a lot of my old stuff to my new niece and some of the stuff I kept is worn and old so I thought she deserved some new things. It's way too fun shopping for kids clothes. This is the end result.

I also promised topost a picture of her fully done up Build-a-Bear birthday present from last week. This is the horrifying picture of the wolf. Poor wolf.

This week we accomplished a fair amount. Although after last weeks break it was hard to get her motivated at first.

Memory Work - I added the Canadian provinces and territories to our daily work.

Phonics - We have moved into 3 syllable words and are getting closer to the end of the book. I think we probably should slow down though until these are in right solid.

First Language Lesson (FLL) - We are still working on nouns, proper and common but I am seeing an understanding of the difference between the two. I like the slow pace of this book, I find it really solidifies and understanding without overwhelming the student.

Writing With Ease (WWE) - We finished week 11 (I think, I am too lazy to go verify).

Song School Latin (SSL) - This week we learned the commands listen, quiet, open your book and raise your hand in both singular and plural.

Math (Singapore) - We moved onto subtraction finally. We are still doing our daily drills and I added the first group of basic subtraction to the list. I have also purchased the games Sum Swamp and Zeus on the Loose for Christmas to have a fun way to work on math facts (without realizing she is working on math facts).

History (SOTW) - We have now entered Ancient China and finally got to read The Story of Ping.
The Story About Ping

Science (Elemental Science) - We began studying birds this week and were going to do the bird feeder activity but we live in an apartment and don't have a spot to hang one. We did go down and feed the ducks though:)

French - We constantly review the previous weeks lessons and we added new vocabulary this week, things around the house.

Do you remember Monchhichi? We were shopping this week and Roo was perusing the toys and came running over telling me to look at the cute monkey. When I looked it took me back many, many years. Obviously that is why they remake toys, because they know we will buy it because it reminds of of our youth. So here is our new Monchhichi.

We had our first big snowfall of the season this week. It was the big, heavy, really wet flakes that get you soaked within minutes. We walked down to the corner store and by the time we were home all of our clothes had to be placed in front of the heater to dry. But it was fun.

We finally built the baby crib this week! Yay! Next on my agenda is to pack those darn hospital bags that are beside me right now staring at me.

School Week 4 - Weekly Reports

This week ended up being a 4.5 day week instead of 5. We had errands and library time on Friday morning that cut our day shorter. On a positive note, Roo was switched from a Friday night ballet class to Saturday morning because Friday nights are really hard to make it to on time. The Saturday morning class I think may be better for her anyway. It has a bigger range of ages from 3-6 which is nice because she has the tendency to fidget a lot and now she isn't the only one. It's funny though, the dance class has a two way mirror out into the waiting room so you can watch your kids without distracting them. They were flying softly like fairies today in a line passed the window, and then there comes Roo flapping like an eagle ready to take off. Hubby has to get up a drive us and I make him suffer the adult social scene with me in there. Today he looked like he wanted the floor to open and to disappear. If I must suffer, so must he (insert evil laugh).

We also got side tracked to feed the ducks.

This week for language arts we completed, Week 4 of Writing With Ease which focused on Alice in Wonderland.  We finished three lessons of First Language Lessons which is still talking about nouns. One lesson of Spelling Workout was completed with only one error of forgetting to double the L in the word sell. For memorization it seems that she has the list of Vertebrates down and half of the Egyptian Ennead. I will add another one or two lists to next week.

In Singapore Math week completed 3 lessons in 4 days and yesterday we focused on the math facts up to 5. I am trying to pace out the work so that we are spending as much or as little time that is needed. When she starts to lose focus during a lesson, it's time to put it away and do the rest the next day. In Geography we were discovering and locating various landforms in North America. We pulled out the atlas, and used the wall map and globe to find them and then mark them in the workbook.

Latin was review week this week. We are both enjoying this course a lot and she really digs the songs for some reason. I find myself annoyingly humming them throughout the day, which I guess is appropriate since the purpose of them is to stick in your head. In French we are still focusing on counting, this week numbers 6-12 plus a big review yesterday to ensure nothing is being forgotten. She likes to test me periodically to see if I know. Or will randomly ask what things are in French and I will have to go look it up and report back. I'm glad that she seems to have an interest in languages, because that is one of my regrets. I wish I would have focused on learning another language when I was younger.

The First Writing was the topic we learned in History. We read a couple of books on Ancient Egypt and did a Hieroglyphic scroll as a project. For Science we focused on elephants, zebras and foxes. We completed narrations, placed them on the food chart and into their correct habitats.

Photobucket
This is the semi finished version of our scroll. I tea stained some paper and then she told me what she wanted it to say. I drew it in pencil and she went over the lines with paint. All we need to add is a wooden dowel to roll it and some ribbon.

In art we finished a picture narration and a water colour art project. Her picture was of a funny experience that her dad had while we were on vacation a few years ago. It involved watching Shark week on television, him snorkeling in a beach called Turtle Bay and an encounter in the water. Today it is still one of the funniest things I have ever seen. We also completed week 4 of our composer study of Hildegarde von Bingen. Next week we move on to Arcangelo Corelli.

Last night we went to the city next to us because is has a guitar store my husband likes to frequent and the mall has H&M which I like to frequent. I was depressed going into H&M for me though because I can't really buy myself clothes like that when I am pregnant, so I bought stuff for Roo. They had great deals on leggings, sweater/shirt dresses, tights and jeans. I think she is officially outfitted for the fall/winter season. Now if only I new for certain what this babies gender was, they had so many cute things for babies there.

This is the bored face while we were sitting in the car waiting for dad to finish his guitar business.

In some random garden outfitted in some of her new stuff. Weird pose and a weird expression on her face.
